In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of a real media product?
When first being briefed with the overall ideal of the five minute film which was 'Social Realism' my filming group went through the ideas that we thought created a social realism genre. We also thought about what would attribute towards have a social realism genre, trying to keep within the common media conventions of the social realism. With this idea we decided to have a ranging view of shots such as wide shots, amateur actors, local locations, and most importantly having real life issues. Having these ideas in mind when initially brainstorming for the film synopsis and even script helped us as a group to stay within using the conventional media themes for social realism as well as keeping the film as realistic as possible without it coming across as unprofessional.
Furthermore, when brainstorming for current issues that are ever present throughout the society three strong issues became an idea for the film. Them being teenage pregnancy, sexting and ultimately the dangers such as the leaking of nude photos; which is a common danger amongst the generation as well as iconic celebrities. The final issue is the one that we finally decided upon and that is the ever present issue of stalking. With this idea, researching into online articles of current issues of stalking as well as articles that display the sheer danger helped to grasp a firm idea onto how to portray this issue throughout the film without being unprofessional. Researching allowed the filming process to depict the issue in a current and modern way. Especially by incorporating the online dangers with stalking as well as certain apps used to do this. By incorporating the app newly developed after a month of filming by Apple ‘Find My Friends’ enabled the film to stay current with the technological side of modern society as well as the generation.
Props and costumes in the film were primarily chosen to attract the current generations. With the main actress wearing a generic jumper and widely acknowledged converse, allowed the film to maintain current with the society although depicting a cynical issue of today’s world. The costumes were chosen to replicate that the actors are young and inexperienced as well as trying to relate it to the issue and problem portrayed. However, whilst choosing a relaxed costume for the main actress, the main actor wore relaxed yet iconic [for our film] clothing; such as the long black coat, black jeans and simple shoes. Allowing him to stand out against the other characters as he represents ‘danger’ being the stalker.
Wide angle shots create a big impact onto the overall design of the film. Wide shots allowed the location to been fully shown allowing the audience to see onto the real locations chosen for the stalking issues. The locations included a park, one of the group members houses, and the iconic living room as well as the cupboard. A wide shot is used as much as it can when the main actor toward the end holds up a gun to his head indicating the end is near as well as the end of the film. Camera man Karl, had a wide angle lens which maximised the film to fully exert all the wide angle shots it possibly could. When holding a gun to his head, the background is revealed showing the park that is a common motif, and the lake. Allocating to the ‘seediness’ against the issue portrayed as well as creating a link.
