SYNOPSIS

One Man Band" takes place in a town square where a little girl has a single gold coin and a desire to toss it into a fountain. But can she really be swayed so easily in this timeless tale of greed and its evils?

CAMERA WORK

The short film begins with the pixar ident, indicating that it's suitable for children and families. The first shot presented shows an old fashioned styled poster that presents a character almost cartoon like. As well as presenting an additional character it also sets the era for the film. The next shot used is a mid shot which shows the poster as well as the first character that we the audience meet. A long establishing shot shows that this character is alone in a empty, isolated village square. A point of view shot is shortly used after this to present an empty money pot, the camera then pans and moves around the village square as if this character is looking for someone to impress. Because of the establishing shot we can see that the surroundings of this character are very European orintated. We can also see that as the money pot is empty the musician is struggling weith his lifestyle and is desperate for money. Another character is introduced by a medium close up, it becomes apparent that this second character is a little girl and she is appeared to hold a gold coin. The desperation from the musician is provoked as she is about to throw the gold coin into the fountain. The protagonist approaches the girl and begins to play –we assume in the hope that the girl will give him the coin, rather than throwing it in the water. Just when the musician thinks he has won the girl over, from the other side of the townsquare, a tall slender man carrying equally as many instruments, sets up his stage and starts to play. A establishing shot is used to show the three characters and the apparent conflict between the two variated musicians.

EDITING

The editing in this film starts after the pixar ident fades and a black screen appears until the title of the film appears in bright colours. Further connoting to the idea that this film is suitable for children. The title then fades into the first shot of the film and is placed onto the poster. Using the title as prop for the short itself.Theee first period of the film normal transitions and cuts are used throughout introducing the characters, setting and story. Once all characters have been introduced the cuts between scenes becomes intense and faster. Showing the intensity of the competition between the two musicians. Namely because the two musicians are trying to impress the little girl and ultimately gain the gold coin. As the gold coin enters the drain the cuts become slower and increased duration presenting her emotions as the scenes are prolonged. It also shows that the drama and intensitiy of the film are nearing to an end.

SOUND

The film starts with a non diegetic music playing, however it abruptly stops as the 'One MAn Band' character is shown. He beings to play diegetic music loudly, but as a establishing shot is used the music becomes quiet as the audience appears to be far away from him. As the establishing shot pans, a pigeon flys away and the sound of the wings flapping are heightened, showing how isloated and alone the musician is. The music is amplified when the second character is introduced as well as the little girl. As the second character is introduced a seperate piece of music is played, as if he's reacting to the other musician. Throughout the ilm the two variating pieces of music act as a dialouge between the two musicans. The music dramatically stops as the precious golden coin is tragically dropped into the drain. Highlightening the impact of this action.
