SOCIAL REALISM FILMS

Here I am analysing a series of short films, all relating to a social realist aspect of life.  Doing this will enable to pick out particular codes and conventions which will further help me in planning my short film. I will also look closely at shot types and camera meanings and interpret their meaning and relation to the film and why they were created for the situations of the film.

KIDULTHOOD

Kidulthood is a social realist film which involves Urban drama that captures the lives of teenages throughout London. Alucidating to the main issues that happen within such as gang crime, drugs, underage pregnacy, stealing, murder, underage alcohol drink and domestic violence. The title is a neologism, as "kidulthood" is a play on the word "adulthood" in order to convey that perhaps children are as mature as adults, or the transformation of children to adults.

The lack of sound at the beginning creates a dense, sinister atmosphere that makes the viewer tense having the conventions of the viewer then questioning what's going to happen next and the future events. When the graphics change with the idents a non-diegetic sound effect interupts this silence, creating a distorted, rough dimension to the start of this film hinting at the film itself and the events that are unfolded as the film goes on. Metaphorically the distortions in the silence of the start symbole the bullets, gangs and crime which what the film primarily focuses on; is the social realist element of the genre. The distortions ultimately ruin an innocent calm place which is typical of the British social realism genre. The non-diegetic soundtrack of urban music creates a tense, mysterious atmosphere which adds to the drama of the scene. It is not too loud so it does not affect the action in the shots which is presented children who seem to be no older than high school teenagers carrying out breaktime. The urban music represents the film as gritty and the people as thuggish and underclass which is how most characers are represented in a typical British social  realism film. There is also the ambient diegetic sound of the children, characters playground sounds such as laughing and screaming in the background by doing thhis gets the viewer ready for the start of the scene.

The diegetic ambient sound of playground kids, laughing, screaming and talking create a realistic and believable scene. It expresses the setting well as it carries out the typical connotations of a breaktime and a high school. The transitions are fast paced, matching the beat of the non-diegetic soundtrack playing over the sound of the children. Furthermore, by allowing the transitions to be quick and fast paced matches the environment that the characters are placed in. Giving the denotation that because they are surrounded in a world of crime, they must be able to think fast. The diegetic mode of address of these people represents them as informal, ‘underground’, underclass people. By using slang words such as ‘proper grimy’ and ‘you get me’ create the idea that these people are young and their education being low. Their usage of dialouge and body language hint upon that they are of the working class and that they may be involved in various crimes. The first shot is a moving wide shot, capturing two characters who are female; hinting that they are some of the main characters. Whilst panning towards a pair of girls, taking consideration and taking focus onto a blonde girl; creating the assumption that she has a key role and effects the film as a whole.

Diegetic sound perspective has been used greatly throughout the opening scene as the focused characters dialogues have been the loudest sound whereas the people in the background are heard but are much quieter as they are further away. This creates a sense of realism and makes it more believable. The continous focus of mid close up shots on main and important characters allow the aduience to gage an idea of the film itself and the events. The heavy machinary which is later reveled to be a drill is shown right after a main character named 'Sam' implies that he and the prop will come into contact soon. Continually the 'urban' and dramatic non-diegetic is played throughout the scene.

The diegetic sound of the drill is used throughout, appearing at certain intervals which distorts the fluidity of the opening sequence connotating towards the harshness of the environment they live in. The reason behind this is the character behind the drill is involved in gang crime and life threatening situations, which implies that the trouble can 'drill a hole' in the 'norm' of these people's ways. It also gives a gritty, rough edge to the film making it more intriguing to the viewer and creates enigma, questioning the importance of the drill.

The cracters used in the narrative each deal with dramatic themes associated with each teenager, some which the audienceare able to relate to such as Becky's drug addiction, alcoholism and sexual promiscuity. Trevor is continously pressured to join the family crime world, as presented by his Uncle paying him to create a gun for him which is later reveled is what the drill was featured for, Alisa's underage and teenage pregnancy which is a high issue within our society and generation, Katie who is constantly bullied and eventually results to suicide, Jay theiving as he steals the beer from the local corner shop with agressive and violent approaches, and Moony who is constantly discriminated based of his race and youth from Cab drivers.  As Kidulthood encaptures dramatic aspects and as drama films often have tragic resolutions, Kidulthood alucidates to this criteria as the death of Trevor at the end, due to being violently attacked by Sam with a baseball bat. Furthermore; the protagonist Trevor has clear relationships with most of the characters in the narrative (e.g. Alisa - ex-girlfriend, Sam - enemy, Jay and Moony - close friends), which is typical of a Drama film genre also as the protagonist has a clear "journey" in the film, as Trevor seems to become more mature throughout the narrative and move away from the negative influence of his uncle Curtis and eventually realise right from wrong deciding between morals. Another character which appears to have a "journey" throughout the narrative is Alisa, as she becomes more accepting about becoming a mother by the end of the film.
